Mental Health Awareness Month: drawchange Success Stories

Mental Health Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to check in on the emotional well-being of our community—especially the children. For many of the youth we serve, navigating the world means facing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). These stressors can impact development, but they don't have to define a child's future.

Our art therapy-based programming is designed to provide more than just a creative outlet; it offers a safe sanctuary for emotional regulation and self-expression. By unlocking potential and nurturing imagination, we help children process complex feelings that words may fail to capture. This month, we celebrate the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of a single brushstroke.

Self Expression Success Stories

The heart of our mission is found in the individual journeys of our participants. Here are three success stories from recent sessions that demonstrate how art fosters growth and confidence.

Heaven: Finding Her Voice and Her Leadership

When Heaven* first joined our sessions, she was deeply reserved. She rarely spoke and felt the need to sit by a friend to participate. However, as the weeks progressed, a remarkable shift occurred. Heaven began to come out of her shell, engaging with volunteers and peers alike. Today, she is a vibrant, articulate leader of our sessions. Not only does she complete her projects with independent confidence, but her positive energy and role-model behavior now inspire other children to embrace their own creativity.

Kayla: Building Focus and Cooperation

Four-year-old Kayla arrived with a boundless energy. In her early days, sitting still or focusing on a single task was a significant challenge. Through consistent participation and the dedicated support of our volunteers, Kayla has made incredible strides. She can now successfully engage through an entire session, completing her art projects from start to finish. Her growth in social skills and her ability to cooperate are a testament to how art can help ground and calm even the most energetic young minds.

Michael: The Quiet Power of Expression

Michael has always been a patient and focused artist, initially keeping his thoughts to himself. Over time, he has become a cornerstone of our group’s social dynamic. He is now a frequent participant in show-and-tell, speaking with visible pride about his artwork and the feelings behind it. Michael's calm, dedicated presence is contagious. Other children have even noted that his happiness makes them feel more joyful while at drawchange. He is a beautiful example of how self-expression can bridge the gap between internal reflection and community connection.
