More Than Just Another 5K...
You will probably see a lot about our 5K fundraiser: Run for Art, Run for Kids in the next two months until Saturday, October 27, 2018. Here's a little bit more about the heart behind the event, and why we need your help and support!
Run for Art, Run for Kids is drawchange's largest fundraiser of the year. All proceeds raised go directly back into our programs that empower thousands of children through art each year. It is our goal to reach as many children as possible here in our very own Atlanta community, as well as in and around our other regional & international locations (Orlando, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and Ethiopia).
Our unique programs are the reason drawchange exists. Not only do we bring empowering art experiences into the hands of children that are not normally exposed to it, we also provide expertly written curriculum that serves to enhance self-esteem, promote collaboration, and expand creativity. All of this with the goal in mind of helping to alleviate their cycle of poverty.
Poverty IS a cycle. It's simple. Those with less resources and power have a more difficult time rising above the cycle and achieving more. That's not to say they can't or there is anything wrong with the way they live. It is much more stressful, difficult, and harder to make ends meet. And those caught in it have a very difficult time escaping from this cyclical pattern. Through art and art therapy-based instruction, we offer these children a means to cope with their current circumstances and envision a future that THEY WANT, while providing them the self-esteem and the agency to make it a reality!
Our CEO & Founder said it best: "Art was my outlet as a child. It helped me cope with life. I want to show children that they can also use art as a way to deal with their current circumstances. Art is empowering. It shows you first-hand that you can attain anything you can imagine. It helps you escape to anywhere you want to go. It’s difficult to soar above your current circumstances if you can’t even imagine them!" This is our goal at drawchange. To help children realize their dreams and know that they HAVE THE POWER to do whatever it takes to reach them.
To put it simply, our 5K IS a fun day where we gather in costumes, spend time with each other, and experience local artists and performers... and it is so much more than that! It is literally the fuel that keeps us going year after year, reaching more and more children, and helping to make the world a better place.
